AAMN Awards
Best Workplaces for Men in Nursing

Purpose:
Male Nurse"To recognize employers that have implemented significant efforts in recruiting and retaining men in a workplace culture supportive of men in nursing at all levels of nursing practice."

Procedure:
An individual or group of individuals shall contact the Awards Task Force Chairperson to inform of their intention to apply no later than April 1, 2012. Upon notification to the Awards Task Force Chairperson, a time to discuss required materials and application process shall be arranged. All applications are due by close of business on July 1, 2012.

Criteria:
1. The organization will electronically submit to the Awards Task Force Chairperson a portfolio detailing its efforts in meeting the needs of men in nursing. Examples of efforts may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Recruitment materials and website images depicting men in nursing
  • Career fairs/ public relations events targeting men in nursing
  • Strategic plans with aim to increase gender diversity in the nursing staff
  • Historical evidence demonstrating an increase in the number of men in nursing recruited and retained by the organization
  • News releases, newsletter articles/ e-journal articles recognizing the contribution of men in nursing
  • Orientation and continuing education materials which are gender neutral as related to nursing professionals.
  • Evidence of involvement of men in nursing in organizational committees effecting nursing practice
  • Evidence of employee health / wellness programs or activities designed to address issues of men's health.
  • Policies which encourage men in nursing to access organizational benefits which encourage their full participation in family life, such as paternity leave, involvement in children's education etc.

The organization must use their own discretion to determine the value and importance of the content they choose to include in their portfolio. The items listed above are only examples of suggested inclusion items and should not be seen as required

2. The organization must provide the following statistical information for the current and previous year:

  • Number of Nurses Employed
  • Percent of nursing staff who are male
  • Number of management / administrative positions held by nurses.
  • Percent of management / administrative positions held by nurses who are male
  • Number of clinical leadership positions (Clinical Nurses Specialists, Educators, Advance Practice Nurses etc) employed by the organization
  • Percent of advance practice nurses who are male.
  • Turnover rate for all nurses
  • Turnover rate for nurses who are male.
  • Number of nurses accessing tuition reimbursement or other advanced education support offered by the organization
  • Percent of nurses accessing advanced education support who are male.

3. The Organization must be accredited by the JCAHO or other body appropriate to their business line. Organizations in business lines where accreditation or certification may not be appropriate should submit documentation of quality assurance activities as they relate to their employment of nurses.

4. The award may be given to the same organization more than once.

5. Organizations receiving the award may display the AAMN logo their website with the citation "AAMN Best Workplace for Men in Nursing 2012" and be provided a link to the AAMN website to be displayed along with AAMN logo. This display shall continue for a period of one year following receipt of the award. The Awards Task Force Chairperson shall coordinate the necessary tools and communications to enable the usage of the AAMN logo.

6. The Awards Task Force will review all application submitted prior to the posted deadline. The Task Force will recommend one application to the board for consideration as the "AAMN Best Workplace for Men in Nursing 2012".

7. Attendance at the annual AAMN national conference is expected of the award-winning organization. A representative from the award-winning organization shall contact the Awards Task Force Chairperson to communicate travel arrangements and attendance.

8. Consideration will be given to the overall presentation of the submitted portfolio. The organization shall use their own discretion in overall presentation of materials.

9. A scoring guideline will be made available online for review prior to submission. All questions concerning the scoring guideline shall be directed to the Awards Task Force Chairperson.
