Best School for Men in Nursing Awards Program

The American Association for Men in Nursing (AAMN) is pleased to announce following recipients of the 2017 Best Nursing School/College for Men in Nursing Award.

Purpose: To recognize a nursing school or college that has provided significant efforts in recruiting and retaining men in nursing, in providing men a supportive educational environment, and in educating faculty, students and the community about the contributions men have and do make to the nursing profession.

Best Schools Criteria

  • The organization will electronically submit to the Chairman of the AAMN Recognition Review Committee a portfolio detailing their efforts in meeting the needs of men in nursing. Examples of efforts may include, but are not limited to the following:
    • Recruitment materials and website images depicting men in nursing
    • Career fairs/ public relations events targeting men in nursing
    • Strategic plans with aim to increase gender diversity in the student and/or faculty bodies
    • Course syllabi that include content on the history of men in nursing and men's health
    • News releases, newsletter articles/ e-journal articles recognizing the contribution of men in nursing
    • Climate surveys are being employed that generate gender specific data
    • Climate surveys which reflect satisfaction within male/underrepresented student population(s)
    • Faculty/ student in-services or programs that highlight men in nursing
    • Efforts made to link male students with role models, such as male faculty and/or male nurses in the clinical setting
    • Activities of the local chapter of the AAMN and/or Student Nurses Association highlighting men in nursing.
  • The organization must use their own discretion to determine the value and importance of the content they choose to include in their portfolio. The items listed above are only examples of suggested inclusion items and should not be seen as required or limited to these.
  • The organization must provide the following statistical information for the current and previous year:
    • Number of male students who graduated in past three years that are program specific (for example, undergraduate, graduate}
    • Percent of male students admitted over the past three years
    • Gender-specific graduation rates
    • Number of male faculty employed
    • Percent of male faculty /staff employed
  • The nursing school or college must be accredited by National League of Nursing or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.
  • The nursing school or college must have had an NCLEX pass rate of 80% or higher for the past three years.
  • The award may be given to the same organization more than once.
  • Organizations receiving the award will display the AAMN logo on their website with the citation “AAMN Best Nursing School/College for Men in Nursing 2017” and provide a link to the AAMN website to be displayed along with AAMN logo. This display shall continue for a period of one year following receipt of the award. The Recognition Review Committee Chairperson shall coordinate the necessary tools and communications to enable the usage of the AAMN logo.
  • The Recognition Review Committee will review all application submitted prior to the posted deadline. The Committee will recommend applications to the board for approval as an “AAMN Best Nursing School/College for Men in Nursing 2017”. The “Nursing School/College” award is not limited to one per year. The committee will determine the number of awards recommended for approval based on their evaluation of applications submitted ?
  • Representation/attendance at the 2017 annual AAMN conference in Las Vegas, Nevada September 21-23, 2017, is expected of the award-winning organization. A representative from each award-winning organization shall be required to contact the Chairperson to communicate travel arrangements and attendance.
  • Consideration will be given to the overall presentation of the submitted portfolio. The organization shall use their own discretion in overall presentation of materials.
  • Scoring will be conducted based on the criteria and information above. All questions concerning the scoring guideline shall be directed to the executive director.
